The United States hasn't won an Olympic medal in cross-country skiing since 1976, but in 2010, several skiers hope to change that. If they're successful, you can be certain it's due to their incredible endurance--cross-country skiers are among the fittest athletes in the world. Deborah King, an associate professor in the Department of Exercise and Sports Sciences at Ithaca College and Joseph Francisco, president of the American Chemical Society, look at the biochemistry of human endurance.NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, has teamed up with the National Science Foundation (NSF) to produce Science of the Olympic Winter Games, a 16-part video series that explores the science behind individual Olympic events, including Downhill and Aerial Skiing, Speed Skating and Figure Skating, Curling and Hockey, and Ski Jumping, Bobsledding and Snowboarding. This groundbreaking project between the NSF and NBC Learn uses the global spotlight of the Olympics to make science more accessible and more interesting to students by showing how science helps athletes fulfill the Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius--Swifter, Higher, Stronger. Whistler (AFP) - Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk won the ladies 30-kilometre cross-country skiing competition on Saturday after a photo-finish with Marit Bjoergen, then apologised to the Norwegian after accusing her of cheating. World champion Kowalczyk, who had accused her rival of using asthma medication to fuel her triple gold-medal triumph, came home in one hour 30min 33.7sec. Norway's Bjoergen was just 0.3sec behind to claim silver while Finland's Aino-Kaisa Saarinen took bronze. "I am sorry, because it wasn't a good time for such a question and opinion," said Kowalczyk after her victory which gave her the gold, silver and bronze set at the 2010 Winter Games. "It wasn't (meant as) an attack on Marit. She is a very good athlete, but I was trying to talk about the asthma problem we have in cross-country, there are a lot of athletes sick with asthma. "We must find a solution. I am really sorry because it wasn't the time for such a conversation." In the race build-up, the last on the women's schedule, an ugly war of words had broken out between the two competitors. Bjoergen's coach said the medication used by the 29-year-old Norwegian, who added the 4x5km team relay gold to her two individual titles, was legal and has been approved by both the International Ski Federation and by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Bjoergen brushed off the controversy. "That annoyed me a little bit, but for me it's already yesterday's news," she said. "I was a little bit disappointed in the ...

Whistler (AFP) - Slovenia's Petra Majdic said Wednesday's bronze in the women's sprint classic was like an Olympic 'gold with little diamonds' after she suffered a bruising tumble into a rocky stream just before the start. The 30-year-old fell three metres down a bank and onto rocks after slipping in the warm-up, but still managed to battle through four rounds to finish third behind Norways's Marit Bjoergen and Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk of Poland. "It was Slovenia's first medal, which is why I think I fought so hard," she said. "I could feel the injury everytime I moved and it still hurt really badly. It might have been a bronze, but for me this medal is gold with little diamonds. "Before the first race, I was thinking 'it's over, it's over' because I could barely move. "But I have been fighting for this for 23 years and many people were cheering for me." Having turned down a pain-killing injection which would have hindered her movement, Madjic gritted her teeth and was in clear discomfort after each of the four rounds on the 1.4km-long course. Madjic had a scan after the race which revealed she had not broken any ribs, but she has deep bruising and ruled herself out of Friday's 15km pursuit. "I think it will be impossible for me to race - in a few days the injury will be much worse," she said. "The best thing I can do is to prepare for the 30km mass start (on February 27th)." Madjic, second in the overall World Cup rankings, said the area where she fell - a bridge over ...

Whistler (AFP) - Russia's Nikita Kriukov held off room-mate and compatriot Alexander Panzhinskiy in a thrilling photo-finish to claim Olympic gold in the men's sprint classic Wednesday. The 24-year-old Kriukov was pushed all the way by Panzhinskiy with the pair crossing the line together, but the photo gave Kruikov the winning time of three minutes 36.33sec, leaving his rival a fraction behind. Norway's Petter Northug Jnr came third. "It was really a difficult race for me, I qualified fourth and I knew Panzhinskiy was my one of the favourites after qualifying first for the final," said Kriukov. "I wasn't nervous at all, it didn't put me at a disadvantage, I knew medals were up for grabs and I fought to the death." Northug, the current overall World Cup leader, made up for the disappointment of finishing 41st on Monday in the men's 15km freestyle, by claiming third at 9.2sec behind on the 1.6 km course at Whistler Olympic Park. Following Monday's disaster, the 24-year-old Northug has finally started showing the type of form which saw him win three gold medals at last year's world championships in Liberec. "It was a very tough race," said the Norwegian. "There was a pretty short break between the semi-final and final. "I tried to close the gap (behind the Russians), but they went really fast and and I didn't have the power on the last hill to catch them." "I didn't see myself as a favourite for gold, I just wanted to reach the final, so I am happy." Currently ranked 18th on ...
